"Way back Wednesday"

Going way back with this one to my first ever horror/scary movie.

This was the first movie that I can at least remember watching as a kid and my first introduction to horror/scary movies. We would make it a nightly event when on TV or when someone was daring enough to rent it. We would go all out with snacks, drinks and all other great stuff we would pick up at a corner store down the street we grew up on that just happen to be named Elm St.

Been closed now for years
but if you walked in with $5 you came out with snacks to last you a week...or at least a few hours.

Most of these post are going to be short and to the point....sorry but at least it will give you time to go and check out more awesome blogs at http://countdowntohalloween.blogspot.com/ and also check back here for other cool stuff to come all month long.

X-Ray Vision for $1

Remember seeing those ads in your old comics, the ones that offered cool toys for almost nothing, only to get a NO as soon as you pointed to the ad when asking your parents for money, then wondering what it would've been like to have that awesome toy? Well there is this cool guy that put together a book that will answer that question and more, its called "Mail-Order Mysteries" and I have to say that this book is AWESOME!

This was one of my favorites to read about. I was always curious about what would actually be sent to who ever ordered something like this. I would've had a blast as a kid if I had one of these.

There are also some secrets revealed about some of the items that were offered, like this "100pc Toy Soldier Set". The ad description was a bit flat...sorry, had to.

Oh and you can't forget the original that everyone can say that they wanted, the amazing "X-Ray Spex". Every young boy that saw these knew that they had to get them for one reason and one reason only...to see what was inside those Birthday or Christmas gifts...you thought it was going to be something else huh.. don't lie you know you thought it.

I had a hard time putting this book down there is so much great stuff in this book I had fun reading this and promise that you will to although I made myself stop reading from time to time because I didn’t want it to end.

Special Thanks to Kirk Demarais for the OK to write this. Want to know more about him and his work head over to SecretFunSpot.com you can find links to his other sites.

Oh and check out his short film "FLIP"

"A Place to Remember"

Most of my Ninja Turtles were purchased from this wonderful store, as well as other toys that I had in my early times called childhood. In the rare instance where the parents actually asked us if we wanted to go to the mall....which was very rare.... it was a given that there was going to be a mandatory visit to KB Toys, I mean it was only the best toy store there if not the only one at the time.

I mean just look at the cool stuff they had, I think I would look at one of these ads over and over .....and couldn't wait for our next visit so that I could run in there and buy something that was not even in the ad... Yeah that’s me and I kind of still do that. The worst part about going with the family was that once I made the toy store visit and made my purchase I was done, I was ready to go home my mission was complete but the rest of the family had other plans.  At times I would ask my parents if I could wait on a random bench in the middle of the mall where as soon as you would sit to play, a random stranger would sit next to you.

It was always awesome when I would show up and they were having one of these type of sales, it was like paradise because most of the other times that I would visit the mall I was with my friends and only had $5 in my pocket.

Sadly this wonderful place made its last few and final sales on February 9, 2009 and shut its doors to one of my greatest childhood places, It took me by surprise as I still remember walking into one of the last stores open and didn't realize it. I guess I was distracted with grownup stuff like going to college, getting a job... blah blah blah. One day I figured that I would take a trip the the mall and was shocked to see just an empty space with its prison fence type door rolled down.

"Halloweens Past"

♪♫ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ♪♫

I can’t wait for that one Halloween day when I get asked “Daddy are going to dress up too” and then I’ll  have to dress up and go trick or treating with my daughter, I’m going to hate it…….YEAH RIGHT! As I write this I am thinking of all the cool things I can be and what costumes I wore as a kid back in the day. I can only think of a few, I went as The Crow one year in my teens and……….umm……wow… my trick or treating sucked I guess, well I do for some reason remember dressing up as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Yeah that’s me as Leo and my cousin Robert as Raph and one thing that I remember is that those costumes were only meant to be worn once and only once because by the end of the night they were barely hanging on by whatever plastic it was made of or had fallen off and stuffed in your candy bag if it fit with all that awesome candy you had, I mean the dang candy bags were made better than the costume itself.

But Halloween was always fun in our family wither you dressed up or not because everyone got into the spirit like my dad, he would just sit there at the end of the drive way and scare kids with just a mask on…now that’s talent.

Even my grandma would sometimes join in on the fun.

That’s my sis and her son Chucks eating the candy for other kids……I taught him well.
